NaPoWriMo Day 13 – Poetry about Poetry: Why We Write

Day 13’s prompt required us to go take a walk and write a poem based on what we noticed and experienced. Brilliant idea – if one had the opportunity to go for a walk. I was not one of the fortunate ones, as I was holed up in my room furiously typing away at an assignment that is due on Monday.

However, all is not lost, because I can still publish a poem (the prompts are optional after all). So for Day 13, I have decided to publish a poem about, well, the some of the reasons people (or at least I) write poetry.

This is how…

This is how I SCREAM…when I cannot make a sound;
This is how I weep…when I cannot form a tear;
This is how I laugh…when the world would not understand
My emotion, my reasoning, my awkward, spontaneous expression.
I find my freedom on this page,
because here all that is politically correct fades into oblivion.
Honesty is all there is;
purity of thought is reflected back at me through the unblemished page…
And I can be who I want to be,
Speak how I wish to,
Express what I need to.
Take a deep breath. Open your eyes wide.
Delve into a world of endless possibilities.
Because here it is just you and the page –
Greatness is merely an ink blot away.

Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday!
